Opinion: It is All About Software Now

May 15, 2018 · Software Engineering

A lot of people are writing stuff about iPhone X. Other write good stuff, for its speed or its innovative hardware, and other are pointing out, that it is a modest failure. Actually, many think that it is a glimpse to the future, but technology has a lot of way to cover.

So, as an early adopter, I got mine, just right after its launch and I was very enthusiastic about it. It was the first time for me that to be secure was not an continuous nag screen every time you wanted to use your phone. Unlocking the phone was really seamless and that was its main benefit as a phone, for me at least.

So, I was traveling to Berlin the other day, and in the airplane they instructed us to enabled “airplane” mode in our phones. I tried to do it, and for once, the phone freeze. I could not unlock it, I could not reset it. Nothing. It was just frozen there.

The old iPhone had an exit path for these situations, you pressed the power button with the main button for a little period of time, and snap, the phone rebooted. But nothing worked on my iPhone X. I tried all the combinations of the three button it has. Nothing worked.

When I began to worry about it, the phone just rebooted. Boom. All worked fine after that, I put the airplane mode on and everything was business-as-usual after that.

So, I was thinking that masked behind all this innovation, is that “it is all software now”. The buttons will eventually diminish, and all that we will have is a touch screen, and the software. iPhone X is the first product that makes that a reality. I just recently read that Google is going to get rid of the buttons on Android phones also. So, we are heading there. Everything that is related to the material world, like buttons, spinners, on/off switches will eventually disappear. To be honest, I’m counting the seconds!
