Self-Configuring and Optimizing Mobile Ad Hoc Networks
Apostolos Malatras, George Pavlou, Sivapathalingham Sivavakeesar, Vassilios Karakoidas
A working system that lets a mobile ad hoc network configure and optimise itself, by making nodes aware of their context and having a proactively maintained group of them manage the network collaboratively.

The idea
A mobile ad hoc network has no fixed infrastructure and a topology that changes as nodes move, which is precisely the setting in which manual configuration cannot work. The approach combines context awareness and cross-layer design with simple management policies and network programmability, so the network responds to its own conditions. To survive the churn, management is not centralised in one node but carried out collaboratively by a body of nodes constructed proactively, before it is needed.
Contributions
- The design and implementation of a working self-configuring and self-optimising MANET system, rather than a simulation.
- Collaborative management through a proactively constructed body of nodes, as the answer to the network's inherent dynamism.
It is a two-page contribution to ICAC '05 — a short statement of a system described at greater length elsewhere by its authors.
