Quoter

A DOS program that prints a random quote from a text file — one of the first things I wrote that worked.

1997DOS 16-bit

Prologue

Yesterday I was searching files in my computer and I found this one accidentally. I know it's not a great program, but it's one of my first programs that actually worked :) — so I put it here only for sentimental reasons. The program was written in Borland Turbo C++ 3.0. It's a DOS application but it shouldn't have a problem under windows in general. Have FUN! Don't ask me for the source code — believe me, you don't want to see it :).

What is QuoTeR

QuoTeR is a program that selects a random quote from a text file and displays it on screen.

Command line setup

To create or modify the CFG file you must execute QuoTeR.eXe SeTuP from the command line. Then just set the file and the letter colour. The program will automatically count the number of quotes in your quote file. The letter colour is set as a number: 0 black, 1 blue, 2 green, 3 cyan, 4 red, 5 magenta, 6 brown, 7 light gray, 8 dark gray, 9 light blue, 10 light green, 11 light cyan, 12 light red, 13 light magenta, 14 yellow, 15 white.

The .quo format

The .quo format is simple. It requires only a quote_mark before the quote. The first line is always the quote_mark. An example:

%%
< QuoTe .......
  .............
  ............. >
%%
< NeXT QuoTe... >

Simple as that. There is a limitation for the quote mark length (255 chars).

Downloads

These are the original files, kept as they were published. Most are decades old and are here as a record rather than as working software.
